It happened again.
These days I feel like I’m almost always pointing to the screen and going, ‘Oh, hey, you were on Xena!’ Or Hercules or Young Hercules or any of the other Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, and Bruce Campbell trifecta collaborations of many years past.
Let’s take Karl Urban.
See, in a word vomit of excitement or more poetically: a fangirl flurry, I’d been encouraging a friend and fellow geek (well… perhaps more coercion and less encouragement in hindsight…anyway!) for why they needed to get with the program and watch Amazon Primes: The Boys.
They of course then asked the usual question: “Who’s in it?” That’s when my teenage fangirl brain really kicked in.
This friend, knowing the usual glint in my eyes, knew what was coming: trivia time. “Cupid from Hercules,” I replied.
I then had to of course follow this up with the ever growing laundry list of geek related projects on Urbans resume.
Yes, this brooding and no-bedside-manner badass we’ve come to adore throughout the years first crossed my little 13in brick tv screen as the bleach-blond tanned God of love.
Note the heart tat on the bicep, so 90s/Ancient Greek classy.
Urban’s performance is loaded with all the teenage angst one would hope to find in this immortal package, equipped with prosthetically attached wings, he may have only graced the show occasionally, but oh such a joy when he did.
For those familiar, the cheese that is Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess is indeed some of the best cheese out there.
To this day, both hold a special place in my heart, perhaps thanks to Cupids trusty bow and arrow.
